Q. State the classification of choppers.

Q. Define chopper. List various types of chopper and state basic principle of chopper.

Types of Choppers

  • The choppers are also called as the dc transformers. Similar to transformers for ac, there are basically two configurations of choppers : 1. Step down choppers 2. Step up choppers.
  • In step down chopper, the load voltage can be controlled between 0 and V, i.e. the output voltage can at the most be equal to the input. Whereas in the step up chopper the load voltage can be higher than the input dc voltage, V.
  • The stepdown chopper can be further classified into four different types. Class A to Class E choppers depending on whether the circuit operates in single quadrant, two quadrants or four quadrants of the average load voltage load current characteristics.

Types of Choppers

(1) Step down chopper

      (i) Type A chopper

              - Single quadrant chopper

      (ii) Type C chopper

              - Two quadrant choppers

      (iii) Type D chopper

              - Two quadrant choppers

      (iv) Type E chopper

              - Four quadrant choppers

(2) Step up chopper

      (i) Type B  chopper
