Q. State any six activities that are done during preventive maintenance of induction motors.

Activities That are Done During Preventive Maintenance of Induction Motors

The activities that are done during preventive maintenance of induction motors are :

Attention towards brushes :

  1. Sparking at the brushes : Sparking is produced due to misalignment of commutator, mechanical unbalance of machine, improper material used for the brushes, change in shape of brushes, dirt or grease deposition on commutator etc. This can be avoided by proper inspection and maintenance schedule.
  2. Adjustment of brush tensions : If all the brushes are not given the same tension then brushes will be unevenly damaged and produced sparking. Adjust the brush pressure properly.
  3. Commutator segment misaligned : If some commutator segments are loose then there will be un-uniform surface of commutator. The brushes will not have perfect contact and therefore sparking will be produced. This can be avoided by maintenance and repairs.
  4. Brushes rocker misplaced : If brush rocker is moved and misplaced then the position of the brushes may not be along M. N. P. and sparking will produced. This can be checked in maintenance work brushes and can be staggered.
  5. Brushes should be staggered : If brushes are not staggered then a continuous groove will be formed on the commutator surface due to friction. In inspection work such on things can be checked and brushes can be staggered.
  6. Brush seating : If brush seating is not proper then overheating of surface on the commutator may damage the commutator. This can be inspected and necessary correction can be done in maintenance work.
