Classification of Transmission Lines based on Length and Voltage

Classification of Transmission Line

  1. Short transmission line
  2. Medium transmission line
  3. Long transmission line
1) Short transmission line
  • Length of transmission line = below 50 km.
  • Voltage = below 20 kV
  • Due to smaller length and low voltage capacitance effect is neglected and only resistance and inductance is considered.
2) Medium transmission line
  • Length of transmission line = D50 to 150km.
  • Voltage = 20KV to 100kV.
  • As there is sufficient length and voltage, capacitance effect is Considered. The distributed capacitance is lumped and shunted across the line to make the calculations simple.
3) Long transmission line
  • Length of transmission line = More than 150 km.
  • Line voltage = Above 100 kV
  • As the length of transmission line and line voltage both are very high, capacitance effect is considered but while representing the long transmission line, parameters are not lumped but are considered uniformly distributed over us entire length of line.
