What is Extra High Voltage Transmission

Introduction and Definition of Extra High Voltage
What is Extra High Voltage Transmission

  • During the past decades the demand of electricity has been increasing at a tremendous rate throughout the world.
  • which has also results into increasing generation and transmission capacity of electrical energy.
  • This increasing need of transmitting greater and greater amounts of power has led to a continuous increase in the transmission voltages.
  • Upto 1970's the electric power was transmitted in the AC high voltage form (upto 220 KV).
  • The present trend has been high voltages (upto 300 kV) to Extra High Voltages (300 to 765 kV) and to ultra high voltages (above 765kV).
  • Transmission voltages used in India are 33 KV, 66 KV, 110 kV, 132kV, 220 KV and 400 kV.
  • Voltages beyond these values are known as Extra High Voltage.
  • The next higher voltage of 765 / 800 kV has been adopted for transmitting a huge blocks of power generating stations to load centers.
