Q. State the different types of fuels with two examples of each.

Fuels can be divided as :

Solid fuels : Wood, coal, charcoal, coke, pulverized fuel etc.

Liquid fuels : Gasoline, kerosene oil, Gas oil, Diesel fuels, Power alcohol etc.

Gasoline fuels : Natural gas, producer gas, coal gas and blast furnace gas.

Q. State the different types of condensers used in thermal power station.

Following are the different types of condensers used in thermal power station :

Jet condensers or Contact condensers :
    1. Low level jet condensers
Surface condensers :
     1. Single pass, two pass condensers.
     2. Down flow, central flow regenerative condensers.

Q. Write the purpose of coal and ash handling unit. Also write different activities that are carried out in this unit.

Fuel i.e. coal, from the storage is fed to the boiler through feeding device, which consists of conveyor belt, crushing mill etc. and is called as coal handling unit. Ahs produced as a result of combustion of coal collects at the back of the boiler and is removed to ash storage through ash handling equipment.

Activities in coal handling unit in Thermal Power plant :

  1. Delivery of coal
  2. Unloading of coal
  3. Preparation of coal before feeding to the combustion chamber.
  4. Transfer : It is the process of carrying the coal from unloading point to the storage site from where it is discharged to the firing equipment.
  5. Outdoor storage (Dead storage).
  6. Indoor (Live) storage.
  7. Inplant handling
  8. Coal weighing
  9. Furnace firing

Activities in ash handling unit in Thermal Power plant :

  1. Bottom ash handling
  2. Coarse ash (economizer ash) handling
  3. Air preheaver ash handling
  4. Fly ash handling
  5. Ash slurry disposal.
