Applications of choppers :

1. D.C. motor speed control.
2. D.C. voltage boosting.
3. Battery operated electric cars.
4. Battery operated appliances.
5. Battery chargers.

Features of Chopper :

1. Chopper produces a variable dc voltage from a fixed dc input voltage.
2. It produces a rectangular output voltage.
3. It can operate in four quadrants of load voltage/ load current characteristics. Can operate at much higher frequencies than mains frequency of 50 Hz.
4. The size of filter components is smaller due to high frequency.
5. No synchronization is required with the ac mains.
